Pool Season Opening Guide: 10 Critical Steps to Take Before Summer

Preparing your pool for use after the winter months involves much more than simply removing the cover and filling it with water. Following the correct procedures in the proper order will not only extend the lifespan of your equipment but also help ensure safe, crystal-clear pool water throughout the season. Drawing on our experience in pool equipment since 1971, we have compiled the most important points to consider when opening your pool for the season.

1. Clean the Pool Surroundings and Cover

The first step in opening your pool is removing leaves, branches, dust, and debris from the pool area. Dirt accumulated on the pool cover during winter can contaminate the water when the cover is removed. Therefore, any standing water and debris on the cover should be carefully cleaned off before removal. Once the cover is dry, fold and store it properly so it is ready for use again at the end of the next season.

2. Visually Inspect Pool Surfaces

Inspect the pool walls, floor, and tiles for cracks, limescale deposits, or algae growth that may have developed during the winter. Pay particular attention to limescale buildup around the waterline, which should be removed using appropriate cleaning products before the season begins. If your pool uses a liner, carefully examine the surface for any tears, bubbles, or discoloration.

3. Inspect Plumbing and Piping Systems

In regions where freezing temperatures occur during winter, pipework may suffer significant damage. Inspect all plumbing connections, unions, valves, and fittings individually. Check ball valves and butterfly valves for leaks and verify that check valves are functioning correctly. If you detect any cracks, deformation, or leakage, replace the affected component to ensure trouble-free operation throughout the season.

Micro-cracks caused by freezing in uPVC pipes and fittings are not always visible to the naked eye. When the system is first filled with water, carefully monitor all connection points to identify any potential leaks at an early stage.

4. Inspect and Maintain the Pool Pump

The pump is the heart of the pool circulation system. Before putting it back into operation, perform the following checks:

  • Visually inspect the pump housing and lid for cracks or deformation.
  • Verify the integrity of the mechanical seal and gasket areas.
  • Clean the pump basket and replace it if it is damaged or deformed.
  • Never operate the pump dry; ensure the system is filled with water before startup.
  • During initial operation, observe for unusual vibration, noise, or overheating.

Excessive noise levels may indicate an issue with the impeller or bearing assembly. Nozbart super-quiet pool pumps are designed through advanced R&D and feature specially engineered impellers and volute designs that operate at minimal noise levels, enhancing your pool experience.

5. Service and Inspect the Sand Filter

The sand filter is one of the most important components affecting water clarity. At the start of the season, inspect the filter tank for external cracks or damage. Check whether the filter media has become compacted and whether the sand level remains adequate. As a general rule, filter sand should be replaced every three to five years; however, if water clarity deteriorates, the sand should be changed sooner.

Before the season begins, perform a backwash to remove accumulated dirt and debris from the filter bed.

6. Refill the Pool

If the water level has dropped, refill the pool with clean water until it reaches the midpoint of the skimmer opening. Water levels that are too low may cause the skimmer to draw air, potentially damaging the pump. Conversely, water levels that are too high can reduce the skimmer's effectiveness in removing surface debris.

7. Start Up the Filtration System

After completing pump and filter inspections, ensure all valves are in the correct position before starting the system. Once the pump is running, check the pressure gauge and record the normal operating pressure. This reference value will help you monitor filter condition throughout the season. A significant increase above the initial pressure typically indicates that the filter requires backwashing.

8. Balance Water Chemistry

Once the filtration system is operating, test and balance the pool water chemistry. The primary parameters to monitor are pH, alkalinity, free chlorine, and water hardness. These values should remain within the ranges specified by the applicable standards in your country.

Low pH makes water acidic and can lead to corrosion of metal equipment. High pH reduces chlorine effectiveness and may cause cloudy water. Properly balanced water chemistry is critical for both swimmer health and equipment longevity.

9. Shock Chlorination and Disinfection

If the pool has remained inactive throughout the winter, bacterial and algae growth is almost inevitable. A shock chlorination treatment should always be performed during seasonal startup. During this process, chlorine levels are increased to three to five times the normal operating concentration, and the filtration system is run continuously for at least eight to twelve hours. Swimming should be avoided during this period.

In addition to chemical disinfection, automatic dosing systems and UV disinfection units can help maintain continuous control over pool water hygiene.

10. Inspect Accessories and Safety Equipment

At the beginning of the season, verify that:

  • Pool ladders and handrails are securely installed.
  • Pool lighting is functioning correctly.
  • Return nozzles are free of blockages.
  • Overflow grates are securely positioned and undamaged.
  • Main drains are clean and fully operational.

For safety purposes, do not neglect to inspect pool perimeter fencing and the mechanical components of pool cover reel systems.
